CaLD Elder Rights Pilot Project
March 2024 – November 2024

Exploring community perceptions and raising awareness of elder rights and elder abuse, this project aims to inform the development of culturally sensitive messaging and materials to support the wellbeing of culturally and linguistically diverse elders.

Celebrating Language and Cultural Diversity in Volunteering

This enlightening panel discussion, held during National Volunteer Week, highlighted the invaluable contribution of multicultural, multilingual and multi-faith volunteers. Leaders from diverse community organisations shared their experiences and strategies for navigating the unique challenges of volunteer management in multicultural settings.

The event underscored the critical need for tailored support and greater data collection on culturally and linguistically diverse volunteer participation, strengthening our community’s cohesion and support systems. Download the discussion paper at the link below.

Understanding Volunteer Leadership and Engagement in Multicultural Settings

Multicultural Village Hub

A community-led initiative, the Multicultural Village Hub offers innovative opportunities for older individuals to enhance their mental and physical health. Through increased community connections, the hub fosters a supportive environment for multicultural engagement in the Belmont and Bayswater local government areas.

Supporting multicultural LGBTIQ+ migrants and refugees in Western Australia, this project aimed to understand intersectional barriers to support services and empower individuals to access services and networking opportunities, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive community environment.

Introduction to Dementia Project
July 2021 – June 2023
Funded by: Dementia Alliance Australia
Completed in partnership with Dementia Australia, this project was designed to increase the knowledge and understanding of dementia within culturally and linguistically diverse communities. It focused on exploring and enhancing community perceptions of and attitudes towards dementia and successfully targeted 22 CaLD communities.

CaLD Cancer Information Needs Project
August 2022 – October 2022
Funded by: WA Cancer Network, WA Department of Health
This project explored the information needs of CaLD cancer patients, their carers and their health providers and its findings contributed to the WA Cancer Plan 2020–2025. It was designed to inform the development of culturally and linguistically cancer resources to support health system improvements. The final project report is available here:

EnCOMPASS: Multicultural Aged Care Connector
June 2021 – July 2023
Funded by: Federation of Ethnic Communities Council
This project supported seniors from CaLD communities to access My Aged Care, the Australian aged care system. Its focus was empowering older people and their communities with the necessary information and support to access government and allied health services. The project overview is available here:

Mobile Aged Care Information and Support Van

This mobile service delivered valuable resources and information to seniors and their families, enabling informed decisions about care needs. It was supported by Member for Maylands Lisa Baker MLA.

Cyber Security Workshop
April 2017 – June 2018
Funded by: WA Office of Multicultural Interests
This was a series of workshops aimed at teaching seniors to navigate the online world safely, enhancing cybersecurity understanding and digital literacy among seniors. It was run in collaboration with local libraries and community groups.

Multicultural Café Series

Empowering CaLD Seniors Project

This project focused on identifying and supporting the needs of CaLD senior groups in Perth, enhancing their access to aged care information and services and enabling advocacy and support for multicultural elders.
